Step 2: Straight Gliding

After you master skating and steeping, the next lesson on learning how to snowboard is straight gliding. This technique is used almost every time you go up on the mountain. When you hit the bottom of the ski slope you always have to unstrap your binding and push off with one foot and straight glide to go through the line and get on the chairlift. I prefer to push off with my foot in the back of my snowboard, but some people prefer to push off with their foot in front of their snowboard. It’s important to practice and find out which position you feel comfortable with.

You only need to strap in with one foot and step up the mountain a short distance to master straight gliding, 10 or 15 feet should be fine. Straight gliding is simply placing your foot on the grip, which is located in the middle of your snowboard and gliding down the bunny hill without falling down. Glide down the mountain until you naturally run out of speed, step back up the bunny hill, and practice this until you feel comfortable.

The purpose of straight gliding is to get the feel of moving on your snowboard while maintaining good posture. I find myself using this technique constantly every time I go up. If you slow down or hit a flat part of the ski slope, you always have to unstrap and straight glide to get yourself moving.
